Birds Special Series Collection Phonecard - The araçari-poca (Selenidera maculirostris) can be found in Argentina and in Brazilian territory in Bahia and from Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul.
The bird feeds on buds, insects and mainly fruits, such as those of the embaúba and the coconuts of palm trees. It plays an important role as a seed disperser, contributing to the maintenance of the forest.
During the breeding period, two to three white eggs are laid and the incubation lasts 16 days and is carried out jointly by male and female. During the adult stage, the species reaches about 33 centimeters.
Forest dwellers consider the araçari-poca as a “weather bug”. They say that when you start chatting and making a racket, the mood will change.
When sleeping, it shares the same tree hole with other individuals of the species. And sometimes, at dawn or in the afternoon, it emits its funny song, something like a “kulik-kulik-kulik”
