Henryk Sienkiewicz ( 1846-1916 ) Nobel Prize Winners (1905)
Why did Sienkiewicz choose Quo Vadis as the book´s title?
Apparently it was suggested to him on a visit to Rome, with his
painter friend Henryk Siemiradzki, who showed Sienkiewicz a small
chapel in the city, where the Latin inscription was written.
Sienkiewicz was also inspired by Siemiradzki´s paintings on ancient
Rome, the most famous being `Dirce Chrzescijanska´, literally
`Christian Dirce´, which is based on the Greek myth in which the
wife of King Lycus was tied to the horns of a bull. Siemiradzki
uses this as a symbol of Christian persecution, showing the queen
tied to a bull killed in gladiatorial combat, with Nero and the
senators looking on.Original book in 1896.
