1983 South Korea Stamps s/s-World Communication Year.
"The Year 1983 is World Communication Year. In November1981, the
General Assembly of the United Nation proclaimed 1983 ""World
Communications Year"" during its 36th session in order to make the
world recognize the fundamental importance of communications
infrastructures as an essential element in economic and social
development, and to provide the opportunity for all countries to
undertake an in-depth review and analysis of their policies on
communications development and stimulate the accelarated
development of communications infrastructures. From October 26
through November 1, 1983, the International Telecommunication
Union(ITU) holds in Geneva, Switzerland, TELECOM 83, an
international telecommunication exhibition, which includes such
telecommunication programmes as seminars, book exhibition, movie
contest, art contest for youths, etc. A pilot project participated
by more than 20 countries will be carried out to accelerate the
development of communications infrastructures of the developing
countries. The national programmes of our country features such
activities as telecommunication exhibition, telecommunication
seminar, and postage stamp exhibition, all of which are scheduled
to be held at the Korea Exhibition Center from August 1 through 10,
1983. An art contest for youths is also being planned.The Ministry
of Communications issues this postage stamp to commemorate World
Communications Year and to provide the general public with an
opportunity to recognize the importance of communications."
