CTT presented on the October 21, a philatelic issue about the Liberal Revolution of 1820 and a book of the same name, written by José Luís Cardoso.
These two pieces that honor this date celebrate the defining and decisive event of the construction of modern Portuguese constitutionalism. According to the book's author, José Luís Cardoso, “the motives that motivated the magistrates, traders and military that led to this liberal revolution were clearly stated by its main protagonists, in the various manifestos and proclamations published, namely: ruling on behalf of D. João VI, resident in Rio de Janeiro, demand the monarch's return to Lisbon and entrust to a provisional governing board the mandate to prepare the convening of Cortes with a view to drafting a constitution. Thus, the first step was taken in building a new regime of constitutional monarchy in Portugal.
The outbreak of the revolutionary movements of 1820 was made possible by the combination of a multiplicity of conjunctural and structural factors.
The Constituent Courts of 1821-1822 served as an instrument of profound change in Portuguese society, and were a decisive step in building a modern constitutional monarchy.
