PUBLIC AUCTION – POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE WORLD

BOER WAR/SHIPWRECK 1900 cover to England written by a member of Lumsden's Horse, with a 1d cancelled East London MR.27.00, on the back is a two line RECOVERED FROM/WRECK OF MEXICAN & a Berkhamsted AP.28.00 arrival cancel. Lumsden's Horse was a corps of 250 mounted light infantry raised from white volunteers from India. They arrived at East London on March 22 where this letter was posted. The 'Mexican' left Cape Town on 4 April & collided the next day with the British Boer War transport vessel SS Winkfield whilst travelling in dense fog 80 miles from Cape Town.
