Coffret officiel contenant la pièce de 2 Euro commémorant les "90 ans de la Fondation de la cité du Vatican".
Le 11 février 1929, dans le hall d'honneur du palais du Latran, lors du pontificat du pape Pie XI, des «pactes du Latran» ont été signés entre le Saint-Siège et l'Italie, qui, pour la première fois depuis l'unification de l'Italie ont permis d'établir des relations bilatérales régulières entre l'Italie et le Saint-Siège.
L’indépendance et la souveraineté du Saint-Siège ont donc été reconnues et, parallèlement, l’État de la Cité du Vatican a été officiellement fondé.
Le Vatican compte environ 920 habitants sur une superficie totale de 0,439 km2, ce qui en fait le plus petit État au monde ainsi que le moins peuplé.
