Mezen painting is one of the most ancient Russian folk art crafts. It was formed by the end of the 19th century in the lower reaches of the Mezen river. The Mezen river is located between the Northern Dvina and Pechora, two of the largest rivers in Northern Europe, on the border of the taiga and tundra. A small, remote village of Palmela on the Mezen river gave the name to the whole direction of the Russian decorative art.
The origins of the Mezen painting are lost in the distant centuries of the original formation of the Slavic tribes. In the mid-1960s, Mezenskaya painting was revived by descendants of the old palashersky masters: F. M. Fedotov in the village of Palmela and S. F. and I. Fatyanova in the village Selishche.
The theme of Mezen paintings and stylization of drawing, conciseness and expressiveness, brings them closer to the ancient rock paintings of the Russian North. In this painting there is no ordinary Russian folk brightness, multi-color. The pattern has reserved and simple graphic shapes.
Rhythm and alternation of colors to the extreme are simple, but significant. In Mezen painting only two colors are used. Red represents life, fire, blood, joy. Black-earth, space, death, sadness.
Signs of primary elements-elements of earth, water, air and fire — occupy a very large place in the Mezen ornaments. This applies to the chessboard and chess pieces.
A straight line is drawn along the edge of the chessboard, which means the ground. Wavy lines indicate water. Also here there are four sides of the world, which are marked by solar signs of different configurations, and the red cross — the combination of heaven and earth. And, most importantly, this deer (elk) - a sign of rain. He causes it to rain, clinging to the horns of clouds. Also the deer is a symbol of the birth of something new, the dawn of spiritual wealth.
On themselves chess figures also drawn land, water, wind, fire, and duck. Duck-a symbol of the night underwater movement of the Sun.
